    Description

Vintage Shaka Nyorai Buddha Wooden Figurine Sense of Serenity
    Details of item:
    This piece measures 3.5 inches.
The piece depicts Shaka Nyorai or the historical Buddha, revered widely among most Buddhist sects.  Buddhism originated in Northern India where the historical Buddha known as Prince Siddhartha (Gautama Buddha) was born and lived in the sixth centuries BC.  When Buddhism arrived to Japan in the 6th and 7th centuries AD through Korea and China, Siddhartha became known in Japan as the "Shaka" or as "Sakyamuni" which means "Sage of the Shaka Clan" and that was his actual birth clan.
The hand gesture of the piece is the Zenjyou-in Mudra, formed by placing the palms on top of one another and resting them in the lap. It symbolizes the Buddha in a state of meditation, and is found only in seated images.
The red rhinestone in his hair is the symbol of his all knowing and the white rhinestone on his forehead symbolizes his all seeing .  The age of this piece is from the 1980's and the condition is very good. He was hand carved from one solid block of Japanese Cypress wood (Hinoki).
