    Description

This stud-type lapel pin/button recently was purchased at a local estate sale, where it was said to date to the late 1800s (based upon other items found packed with it), but this has not been confirmed.  It appears to be from a fraternal benefit group and has an attractive, detailed design showing two men in early 19th century clothing.  Surrounding this image are the words
    MUTUAL PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION
    and
UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL
.  There is no mark for manufacturer or metal content; however, the composition appears to be bronze
.  The diameter of the front portion is approximately 23 mm (7/8")
    .
This item is in very good condition, with very light wear (if any), and it remains somewhat bright.
